Join us at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for an afternoon conversation that brings together Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel with Emily Braun, Distinguished Professor of 20th Century European and American Art at Hunter College. The two experts will discuss Kandel’s most recent books, Reductionism in Art and Brain Science and The Age of Insight, in which he examines how science can inform the way we experience a work of art and seek to understand its meaning.

Eric R. Kandel is University Professor and Kavli Professor in the Departments of Neuroscience, Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, and Psychiatry at Columbia University. He is director of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science and co-director of the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia. In 2000, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His recent books include The Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present (2012) and In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind (2007), as well as Principles of Neural Science (2012), of which he is lead coauthor.
Emily Braun is Distinguished Professor at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. Her research interests are interdisciplinary and include the interaction between political ideologies and visual representation; the construction of gender and otherness in art criticism; the history of exhibitions and collecting; Cubism and popular culture; and theories of viewer reception. She also writes on European art since 1945. Since 1987 Braun has curated the Leonard A. Lauder Collection of Cubist Art. She is the author of Mario Sironi and Italian Modernism: Art and Politics under Fascism (2000), and most recently co-curated Cubism: The Leonard A. Lauder Collection (2014) for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
